Artistic Statement
My work combines hand-painted portraits with a specially programmed light installation. At its centre are people from different cultures, whose expression and presence inspire me. Light here is not merely a design element but part of the work itself: it changes colours, depth, and atmosphere, letting the image appear anew depending on the lighting situation. This results in pieces that extend traditional painting with an additional layer, mediating between art, space, and light.

Varinia Oberholzer is an artist and trained theatre painter. She is fascinated by the connection between painting and light, and by the possibility of letting images take effect beyond the canvas. At the centre of every work is a digital core that controls the integrated light art and brings the image to life through precise light staging. This results in hand-painted, one-of-a-kind pieces in which traditional craftsmanship meets modern technology.
